Free Choice: Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have begun their 2010 season. They have come out the gate with a 500 record. Standing at 4-4 they are in fourth out of five teams in the American League East. In their home opening series against the dreaded New York Yankees they dropped two games at Fenway and managed to win one. In two outings, newly acquired pitcher John Lackey has looked quite strong. He picked up his first win today against the Twins of Minnesota in their new ballpark, Target Field. Both Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz join Lackey with a win a piece.

As far as hitting goes in this young season, former slugger David Ortiz has stumbled out of the gate. It looks like a repeat of the beginning of last season. Leading the league in strikeouts (13) and sporting a dismal .154 batting average it looks like he is in for a long season on the bench if things do not turn quickly. Not far behind him in the strikeout category is overpaid player of the decade, J.D. Drew. With 10 strikeouts and a .167 batting average he is a big bat that needs to turn it around as well.

It is still early in the season and there is plenty of time for the Sox to get things in gear. Management needs to coach these guys to their full potential or let them know that sub par performances are not going to be tolerated.

Internet Communication Impact in Education

The use of Internet Communication has a huge impact on education in this present time. It is the main source teachers use to communicate with students to inform them of cancelled classes, tests and quizzes, and exam dates. The University goes to the extent of setting up every student with a university e-mail account that teachers can reach them at. One type of social networking that teachers use is the blackboard vista. It is a class website where teachers go on and post notes, grades, test dates, and attendances. Some teachers also require students to go on live discussions with other classmates through blackboard. In my psychology class freshman year we had weekly blog assignments about various topics through blackboard vista. Another internet tool we use for education is ISIS. It is a server that the University uses to allow students to add/drop classes and view their course schedules. Students can also view their entire financial portfolio from this website.

iPad and Education

The breakthrough of Apple’s new product, the iPad is surely guaranteed to revolutionize many aspects of technology in 2010. One area in particular that Apple is targeting is the education industry. It is said that Apple is looking to cross the T’s and dot the I’s to make it official with major textbook publishers. A business partner of Apple, ScrollMotion Inc., will be the company turning textbooks into electronically viewable pages. Imagine the hassle of not having to carry those heavy textbooks to and from class anymore!!! Scoliosis testing in elementary and middle schools will be a thing of the past. What a weight off the shoulders of our future children, literally! With these electronic textbooks students can play video, highlight text, record lectures, take printed notes, search the text, and participate in interactive quizzes as well.

Adding Images to a Blog Post

This picture is a picture of a resort in Fiji. Fiji is interesting to me because it looks like paradise. I would also really enjoy traveling there. I found this particular photo from a Google search.

Course Expectations

I would say my expectations for this course are high to quite high. I have always been fairly "computer savy" with word and powerpoint but not so much with the internet. I know basic surfing and researching skills but nothing to in depth. To add I am pretty proficient at using facebook. I hope to learn how to create my own website by the time the course is over. With this being said I obviously am anxious to also learn about the processes that go into making a webpage. The only blog I read is www.barstoolsports.com. It is a pretty entertaining Boston based blog about various happenings pertaining to the city and the area. It talks about sports teams, issues in the news, and even puts up pictures of the hottest college girls in the area. The main reason I am a fan of the site is because it is all information relative to the area, and its a great way to stay informed. Additionally the site is very humorus.

Colin's Introduction

Hey everyone, my name is Colin Daly. I am currently a junior at UML pursuing a degree in criminal justice with a minor in law. I'm from a small town 15 minutes north of Boston called Lynnfield. I come from a family of six, one older brother and two younger sisters. Presently I hold a job at the 99 Restaraunt in Stoneham where I am a host. Outside of school and work I like to stay active by playing sports and going to the gym. On the weekends I like to drink with my freinds and attend work hungover. Just kidding, but seriously.
